Why are the distance countries now recognizing Palestine as an independent country, from Britain to France?

After Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal, France has now announced to recognize Palestine as an independent country. Israel has opposed this. In this way Palestine has come under discussion. Palestine’s name and identification have been going on thousands of years ago. This has been a holy land in the Bible and Islamic traditions, where the religious places of Jews, Christians and Muslims are located. By the beginning of the 20th century, this area was under the Ottoman Empire (Turkish rule). But when Ottoman lost in the First World War (1914–1918), the League of Nations gave the responsibility of running the region to Britain. This period (1920–1948) is called the British Mandate of Palestine.

Britain promised to give a national home to the Jews by releasing the Balfor Declaration in 1917. As a result, the migration of Jews increased from other countries including Europe and they came to Palestine in large numbers. At the same time, the Arab population such as Palestinian Muslims, Christians and others remained in their traditional residence.

How did Palestine become?

After World War II and the massacre, the demand for a safe nation for the Jews became very fast. In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly passed the Partition Scheme, according to which it was proposed to divide the land into two states. One- Jewish State (Israel), Second- One Arab State (Palestine)

Jerusalem was proposed to be kept under international control due to its religious importance. But Arab countries and Palestinians did not accept the proposal, while the Jews accepted it. On 14 May 1948, Israel declared independence as soon as the British Mandet ended. The very next day, Arab countries, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon attacked him.

The first Arab-Israel War began. After that war, Israel captured more land than the partition plan of the United Nations. Jordan controlled the West Bank (western coast). Egypt took possession of Gaza Strip. The proposed Palestinian state could not come into existence. About 7-8 lakh Palestinians became Arab refugees.

This was the point when Palestine remained an incomplete and hanging in the balance on the world map, whose legacy and existence’s fight continues till now.

Who recognized Palestine?

Palestine’s independence was announced on 15 November 1988 in Algeria. So far, more than 140 countries including India have recognized Palestine as a state. It is mainly from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Arab countries. Sweden was the first major country in the European Union to recognize. Later Ireland, Spain, Norway and Portugal also joined it. Palestine at the United Nations received the status of non-member observer state in the year 2012.

There are some big countries who had not given recognition earlier, but now they have given their seal by giving recognition. Arguments have also been given behind this. Portugal has also been included in Britain, Canada and Australia.

Portugal: First was with Israel, now why is the recognition of Palestine?

When Israel was formed in the year 1948, Portugal was ruled by Antonio The Olivera Salazar. This rule was connected to the Western camp and the US. At that time Portugal recognized Israel, but did not support the status of independent state to Palestine. Some of the main reasons for this are given in this way.

  • Cold War atmosphere: Portugal was part of the Western Gut and the Palestinian issue came in support of Soviet and Arab countries.
  • Colonial mentality: Portugal himself was colonized in Africa and Asia (Goa, Angola, Mozambique), he was not interested in supporting the national liberation movements.
  • American pressure: The US policy was a supporter of Israel, and Portugal lived with that stream.
  • Now the scenario has changed in 2024-25. The Parliament of Portugal now officially recognized Palestine. These arguments were given behind this.
  • Human approach: This decision was taken in view of the Gaza war and the status of Palestinians. Portugal called it a human duty.
  • European Tilt: Like Ireland, Spain, Norway and other European countries, Portugal is also seeking a more balanced stand within the European Union.
  • Domestic politics: The pressure of leftist and socialist parties, which has been advocating the recognition of Palestine for years.
  • Future peace process: Portugal wanted to convey the message that the two-state solution is the only way.

Britain: First remained silent, why now give recognition?

Britain did not recognize Palestine for a long time because it argued that this step should be part of the Israel-Pilistine peace process and mutual interaction. Between the recent changing situations, humanitarian crisis in Gaza and global pressure, Britain gave this recognition so that concrete steps could move towards two-nation solutions and strengthen its diplomatic role in the Middle East.

Canada: Is the seal in pressing?

Canada has traditionally been a close associate of Israel and that is why he first abstained from giving state status to Palestine. However, now Canada took this step due to increasing demand, global justice and pressure on human rights questions, and domestic support, so that the message of balanced and responsible foreign policy could be sent to the message of foreign policy.

Australia: What is the objective to improve the image?

Australia did not give this recognition earlier because it was running in accordance with the policy of America and Western alliance and believed that it was necessary to have a peace agreement first. The recent violence and human crisis changed his policy. Australia gave recognition so that his image came out as a fair and just partner and his moral influence in the Asia-Pacific region also increased.

France: Argument given in peace and security

After Portugal, French President Emmanuel Macron has officially recognized the nation of Palestine. In the United Nations meeting, Macron said, the only solution to recognize Palestine as an independent nation is the only solution. We have to put full strength so that two state solutions can be cleared for the peace and security of Israel and Palestine.

What will be the effect of recent beliefs on Israel?

The impact of large western countries like Britain, Canada, Portugal and Australia to recognize Palestine will have an impact on Israel at many levels.

  • Diplomatic pressure: There will be more pressure on Israel on the international platform, because its traditional countries are now recognizing Palestine. This can create a situation of separation.
  • Compulsion for talks: The demand for two-nation solutions will now arise loud. The pressure on Israel will increase to interact directly with Palestine leadership.
  • Global image: Earlier, Israel was confident that the western countries are standing in its favor, but now his international image could be even more disputed, especially on the issue of Gaza.
  • Effect on America:With these steps, there will be indirect pressure on America to clarify its policy, otherwise its allies will be seen holding a different direction from it.

Overall, this step is a sign of political and diplomatic isolation for Israel and can compel it to reconsider the future policy.

1947 partition root of dispute

The history of Palestine is a complex mix of colonial politics, religious identity and geopolitical conflict. The division of 1947 is at the root of this dispute, and even today the solution is hidden in the concept of the same two states. When Portugal sidelined Palestine in 1948, it was due to global powers and colonial mentality. But he now recognized, because now the situation and international pressure have changed. The tragedy of the Palestinian people has shocked the world conscience.

The Palestine controversy continued to renew the dispute every decade, and proved that peace is not possible until both sides get equal rights and recognition. Today, with the recognition of more than 140 countries, Palestine stands far more strong on the world map. But real peace and sovereignty will come only when Israel and Palestine will exist as their respective nations, within independent, safe boundaries between mutual agreement and international guarantee.
