Diplomatic Stir: 8th EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue

The eighth round of strategic dialogue between the European Union and Pakistan was held in Islamabad on 1 June 2026. The meeting was co-chaired by Kaza Kalas and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. During this, Kalas also met Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir. Europe’s biggest compulsion: US-Iran mediation

The biggest reason behind Europe’s inclination towards Pakistan is the ongoing instability in the Middle East (West Asia). During his visit, Kaza Kalas publicly praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to mediate between America and Iran.

Currently, Pakistan is playing an important role in the backchannel talks to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and to advance the ceasefire in the region. Kaja Kalas made clear that the EU is ready to negotiate with Iran on the nuclear stockpile and other issues and that it sees a big role in making any possible agreement permanent. In fact, diplomatic experts believe that the European Union is trying to please the Pakistani army and its leadership to keep itself at the Iran negotiation table. The need to secure Middle East peace and energy supply chains (especially trade through the Strait of Hormuz) has brought Europe to Pakistan’s doorstep.

GSP+ and trade interests

Another major reason for this conversation between Europe and Pakistan is ‘Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus’ (GSP+). Pakistan is pushing to expand the scheme, which gives it duty-free access to European markets, to save its flagging economy. Kaza Kalas acknowledged Pakistan’s keen interest in this direction and agreed to work together further.

Afghanistan, security and fear of migration

Europe is also concerned about the situation in Afghanistan and the migration from there. The EU wants to work extensively with Pakistan on counter-terrorism cooperation, combating human trafficking and security concerns related to Afghanistan. The compulsion of Kaza Kalas is also that if instability increases in Pakistan, then the flow of illegal immigrants towards Europe may increase, to stop which Pakistan’s cooperation is mandatory for them.
