The government has taken a big step to promote clean energy and energy transition in the country. Now hydrogen, CNG, LPG and LNG fuel dispensers can also be government inspected. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has amended the Legal Metrology Rules to allow Government Approved Testing Centers (GATCs) to test these fuel pumps. This decision will strengthen the fuel measurement system and will help consumers in getting the right amount of fuel.

The government believes that the use of clean fuel will increase rapidly in the country in the coming times. In such a situation, it becomes necessary that consumers get fuel in the right quantity and there is no discrepancy in measurement. The rules have been changed for this purpose. After the amendment, the number of devices that can be tested by GATCs has been increased from 18 to 23. This will increase the availability of testing services across the country and speed up the work. According to the ministry, this step will also help in strengthening clean energy infrastructure.

This much money will be spent on investigation

Under the new rules, the inspection fee for petrol and diesel dispensers has been fixed at Rs 5,000 per nozzle. Whereas for CNG, LPG, LNG and Hydrogen dispenser, this fee has been kept at Rs 10,000 per nozzle. The ministry says that modern technology is used in these fuel systems, hence their testing process is more specialized.

GATCs are private laboratories and facilities that are approved by the government. They have the technical ability to test weighing and measuring instruments under the Legal Metrology Act. This will reduce the pressure on government agencies and the investigation process will become more effective. The government has also given additional powers to the states. Now state governments will be able to notify new device categories for GATC testing as per local needs. Apart from this, an attempt has been made to speed up the process by giving the authority to give approval to officers of Joint Secretary and above.
