Gujarat is the stronghold of power generation.
Amidst the scorching heat, the demand for electricity is increasing in Uttar Pradesh. Cases of power cuts and faults are increasing. Meanwhile, there is news of relief for crores of electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has banned the proposed 10 percent additional tariff collection in electricity bills in the month of June. Despite being among the largest states in the country in terms of population and size, Uttar Pradesh is not even in the top-5 in power generation. Gujarat is first in this matter. The figures of the Energy Ministry confirm this.
Gujarat is the state which provides maximum electricity to the country.Gujarat alone has 12.61 percent share in the electricity generated in the country. After this Maharashtra and other states of the country are included. Now the question is how Gujarat has become the hub of electricity production and which states are included in the top-10.
How did Gujarat become the powerhouse of power generation?
Gujarat is ahead in electricity production not just for nothing. There are years of hard work and planning behind this. Thermal, hydroelectric and renewable energy plants have been developed here on a large scale. With huge solar parks like Charanka and large wind power plants, Gujarat is also a leader in clean and green energy production.

What is the condition of other states?
- Maharashtra: Maharashtra ranks second in terms of electricity production. Maharashtra alone has 10.71% share in the electricity generated in the country. Due to major power plants like Tarapur Atomic Power Station and Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station, Maharashtra supplies electricity to a large part of India’s industrial sector and metropolitan cities.
- Rajasthan: Rajasthan is at third place with 10.29% share in electricity production. Some of the world’s largest solar power plants are located there, including the Bhadla Solar Park. Rajasthan is also expanding wind power and thermal power generation capacity in different parts of the state, making it an important contributor to India’s energy future.
Uttar Pradesh is not even in the top-5 in electricity production.
- Tamil Nadu: This southern state produces about 7.63% of the country’s electricity. It leads India in renewable energy production, especially wind energy. Tamil Nadu is meeting the power demand in industries and urban centers in conjunction with conventional thermal projects.
- Karnataka: Karnataka is at fifth position in the list of states producing maximum electricity in the country. Its share in electricity production in the country is 6.30%. Not only this, it is also ahead in the production of solar and wind energy. In the last few years, there has been an increase in electricity production due to renewable energy projects here. As a result, this state has been successful in making its place in the top-5.
In terms of electricity production, Uttar Pradesh is at sixth place, Andhra Pradesh is at seventh place, Madhya Pradesh is at eighth place. At the same time, Telangana is at 9th position and Haryana is at tenth position.
