Arecanut farmers in malnad: MP B.Y. Raghavendra said that betel nut is a commercial crop as well as a religious symbol. He was speaking at the annual general meeting organized on Saturday by Malnad Betel Sales Cooperative Society Limited at Prerna Auditorium on Sagar Road, Shivamogga. He said that our Malanad region has made its mark as the largest betel nut producing area in the country by growing betel nuts in thousands of hectares.
He said that in this way it is making its valuable contribution to the economy of the state and the country. Apart from this, the cooperative sector is supporting the small farmers who grow betel nuts from time to time to live self-reliant life by giving them necessary financial help. He said that it is an example to support farmers even in times of difficulties like rot disease. The central government is also giving necessary support by making schemes promoting betel farmers and implementing them. The right fund is also being given for new types of research on betel nut. He said that the morale of farmers is being increased by giving compensation even if the crop is bad. Not only this, betel nut is not just a crop, but it has a special place in Hindu religious customs.
It is proud to say that betel nut is also a commercial crop and a religious symbol. He assured, “I promise to provide more important facilities to the farmers by staying in constant contact with the ministry in the coming days.” On this occasion, District Magistrate Gurudutt Hegde, Mahesh, Kirtigowda, Virupakshappa as well as committee officials and members were present.
