Mumbai: Cricket and Bollywood have always shared a deep, intertwined history, from celebrity-owned IPL franchises to star-studded appearances at crucial matches.
But for Aamir Khan, the connection is more personal and painful.
In a recent interview with Lallantop, the Bollywood superstar revealed a little-known anecdote: he got married to his first wife Reena Dutta on April 18, 1986, a date etched in the memory of every Indian cricket fan for a very different reason.
That was the day Pakistan’s Javed Miandad hit a last-ball six off Indian bowler Chetan Sharma in the final of the Austral-Asia Cup in Sharjah, snatching a dramatic victory from India.
“Same day, we got married. We were stressed when we returned home,” Khan said. “But nobody asked us anything as everybody was watching the match.”
The actor recalled being overjoyed when it seemed India was heading for a win on the same day as his wedding.
“I was happy that India was winning the match on the same day I got married. That too against Pakistan. But then Miandad hit the six and we lost,” he added, laughing.
Years later, Aamir bumped into Miandad and couldn’t resist sharing the story.
“I told him, ‘Javed Bhai, you did not do well. You ruined my wedding. That day you hit a six. I went into depression.,'” Aamir added.
While Khan and Reena eventually divorced in 2002, he recalls the day with a mix of nostalgia and humour.
