New Delhi, August 11: Anju Jain, a former wicketkeeper-batsman of the Indian women’s cricket team, has carved a niche in the cricket world with her calm demeanor, technical skills, and dedication to the team.
Her hard work and responsibility on the field have significantly contributed to strengthening Indian women’s cricket.
Born on August 11, 1974, in Delhi, Anju had a passion for cricket. However, her family emphasized the importance of education alongside sports. Her father made it clear that if she failed academically, she would have to stop playing cricket. This motivated Anju to balance both her studies and her love for the game.
Although Anju became one of the most reliable wicketkeepers for the Indian women’s cricket team, wicketkeeping was not her first choice. She aspired to be a batsman, but due to a lack of a wicketkeeper in the Delhi junior team, she took on the responsibility. In domestic cricket, she represented Delhi and Air India.
Anju played a total of 73 international matches for India. Between 1995 and 2003, she played 8 Test matches, scoring 441 runs at an average of 36.75 across 12 innings, which included one century and three half-centuries.
From 1993 to 2005, Anju participated in 65 One Day Internationals (ODIs), accumulating 1,729 runs at an average of 29.81. In this format, the right-handed batsman scored 12 half-centuries. Behind the stumps, she proved to be reliable, stumping out 59 players and catching 45.
Anju enjoyed playing in the ‘V’ area between mid-off and mid-wicket. She was not afraid to hit aerial shots and was known for her powerful strikes during her playing days.
For her outstanding contributions to cricket, Anju Jain was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2005. She has also served as the chairperson of the Indian team selection committee and coached the Bangladesh cricket team. Additionally, she has provided coaching in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Anju Jain has demonstrated that success requires not just talent but also consistent hard work, discipline, and patience. By prioritizing the team’s needs, she fulfilled her responsibilities. Her dedication illustrates that regardless of circumstances, maintaining self-confidence and persistent efforts can lead one toward their goals.
