New Delhi: After being roped in as India’s captain in the longest format, Shubman Gill is set to take over the reigns from Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format as well, as per a report. While Gill hasn’t proved much successful yet as he had been at the helm for just a couple of Test matches, in which he lost one and won one, his prospects as India’s next ODI skipper are growing.
As per a report in SportsTak, Gill is set to be well in queue to lead India at the ODI World Cup 2027 and could possibly be considered as the next skipper for the team before that as well. Regular ODI skipper Rohit, who retired from the T20Is and Tests, is preparing well to keep himself fit till the 2027 ODI WC in South Africa.
Rohit aiming to captain IND at ODI WC 2027
After going down in the finale of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, Rohit would be aiming to sign off on high with the next ODI WC trophy after lifting the 2024 T20 WC title. Team India is currently in England for a five-match Test series and their next ODI assignment would be probably in the month of August where they will tour Sri Lanka for a white-ball series.
It will be followed by India’s tour of Australia later this year in October and some media reports claim that Gill could be given a chance to lead the side in the ODIs. With Rohit pulling out of both the other formats, the BCCI seems to be in doubt about the participation of the veteran player in the marquee event in 2027 as its two years away.
In such a scenario, the Indian cricket board is contemplating of roping in anew face who could possibly drive India in the the fifty-over format in future as well and apart from Gill, there seems to be no other face in the line.
