The famous Kanhaiyalal massacre of Udaipur is once again in discussion. On this adventurous incident, a film named Udaipur Files has been made and the release of the film has been stopped by the Delhi High Court at present. After all, who was Kanhaiyalal?
Kanhaiyalal used to run tailor shop in Dhanmandi area of Udaipur. He was an ordinary citizen who had no direct relation with politics or any dispute. His family was entangled in the shop and everyday life. But a social media post changed his life. He posted a post in support of BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
How did it start?
Kanhaiyalal shared a controversial post focused on Prophet Mohammad Saheb on his social media account. Some people objected to this post and also lodged a complaint with the police. The police arrested Kanhaiyalal, but was later released on bail. Even after the release, she continued to get threats, due to which she also demanded security from the police.
This is how the murder was carried out
On 28 June 2022, two youths Riyaz Akhtar and Gaus Mohammed came to the shop of Kanhaiyalal as customers. He called Kanhaiyalal on the pretext of sewing clothes and then brutally murdered him with a sharp weapon. A video of this entire incident was also made, which was later made viral on social media. In the video, the accused were seen taking responsibility for the murder, calling himself a true follower of Islam after the murder.
After this incident, tension spread throughout Rajasthan including Udaipur. Curfew was imposed in place, internet services were discontinued and police-administration was alerted. This incident was condemned across the country and it was described as an example of religious fanaticism. Many political parties and social organizations also demanded severe punishment for the culprits.
Stress remained even after the arrest of the accused
Both the accused were arrested immediately after the incident. In view of the seriousness of the case, its investigation was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Investigation revealed that the accused also had relations with international terrorist organizations. The NIA filed a charge sheet under several sections in this case. This case is still pending in the court of Jaipur.
‘Udaipur Files’ film and controversy
The film ‘Udaipur Files’ based on this murder was made, claiming to show various aspects of the incident. During the trailer and promotion of the film, it was said that this film is based on a true incident and is made with the aim of making the society aware. But even before the release of the film, some organizations and individuals objected that this could increase communal tension in the society and can raise questions on fairness.
Delhi High Court stays
After these objections, a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court, demanding a ban on the release of the film. The court has given a temporary stay on the release of the film in view of the seriousness of the case. The court says that until it is ensured that the film will not have any negative effects in the society, it cannot be released. The court has also sought answers from the censor board and filmmakers.
The Kanhaiyalal murder case highlighted religious intolerance, social media misuse and law and order challenges in the country.
