E-passport

Taking a big step towards making travel documents modern and safe in India, the Ministry of External Affairs has started the facility of e-passport. This scheme, which started as a pilot project in April 2024, is now gradually reaching passport service centers across the country. Since June 2025, it has been formally implemented across the country.

What is e-passport?

E-passport is exactly the same as traditional Indian passport in appearance, but modern technology has been added to it. Its cover consists of RFID chip and antenna, in which the biometric information of the holder such as fingerprint and digital photos is safe. This makes it almost impossible to make a fake copy of the passport. A golden mark is made under the word Passport on its cover, which can easily identify it. The most important thing, this passport is in line with international ICAO standards, so it is recognized worldwide.

Where will you get from?

Initially, this facility was available only at Passport Seva centers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Ranchi and Delhi. But now it has been implemented across the country under the Passport Seva Program 2.0. Although its facility will not be available simultaneously at all centers, citizens can apply. Those who have a valid general passport right now do not have to change it immediately.

Who can apply?

Eligibility for e-passport is exactly the same as normal passport. Any Indian citizen can apply. The necessary documents are also the same identity card, the proof of the address and the evidence of the date of birth. Also, it will be mandatory to go to Passport Seva Kendra and get biometric verification done.

Application process

  • Go to the passport service portal and register/login.
  • Fill the online application form and choose a close passport service center.
  • Submit the prescribed fees online and book the appointment.
  • Arrived at the center with necessary documents on the due date.
  • E-passports will be issued after verification and biometric capture there.

What will be the benefits?

  • According to the government, the e-passport will have many benefits.
  • Safety: It will be extremely difficult to change or make fake data in the chip.
  • Fast checking: The immigration process at the airport will be fast, especially in countries where there are automated e-gates.
  • International recognition: India’s passport will be in line with global standards.
  • Identification Safety: Electronic and biometric features together will protect citizens from theft.
