Microsoft Outlook down worldwide, users stuck with “Something went wrong” error

New Delhi: Microsoft Outlook is currently facing a widespread outage, leaving millions of users around the world unable to access their emails, calendars and contacts. The disruption started late last night and is still affecting several regions as of this morning.

The issue was first acknowledged by Microsoft on its official Microsoft 365 Status handle on X (formerly Twitter), where the company said it was investigating and working on a fix. According to Bloomberg, the company later confirmed the problem on its Service Health page, stating users are “unable to access their mailbox using any connection methods.”

Outlook down for hours, users frustrated

The outage began around 10:20 PM UTC (3:50 AM IST), with users seeing a “Something went wrong” error when trying to access Outlook via web, mobile or desktop apps. The message included a refresh option, but most attempts led to the same error.

Downdetector, a website that tracks service issues across the globe, showed hundreds of complaints from users. Many took to X to share screenshots and express frustration, with some saying it disrupted their work schedule and delayed meetings.

Microsoft said its engineering team had deployed a fix and was monitoring its progress. In its latest status update, the company said, “The fix is progressing quicker than anticipated and we expect impact to gradually mitigate as it progresses. We believe the issue will be resolved by our next update time,” which is expected around 10:30 AM UTC (4:00 PM IST).

Not the first Microsoft outage

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Outlook or Microsoft 365 services have gone down in recent years. In a similar case last year, Word, Excel, OneDrive and other services were down for nearly four hours.

This time, though, the outage has stretched well over 11 hours, making it one of the longer disruptions for Outlook in recent memory. Other services under Microsoft 365 like OneDrive, Copilot and Whiteboard appear to be functioning normally.

Microsoft Teams, the company’s workplace communication tool, also faced issues earlier in the day but those were resolved quicker.

What users can expect next

While Microsoft hasn’t given a confirmed timeline for full recovery, the company appears confident that the patch already in place will help fix the issue soon. Users have been advised to keep checking the Microsoft 365 Status page or the official X account for updates.
