Norway Launches Online Residence Permit Renewals for Eligible Foreign Residents

Foreign nationals already living in Norway can now renew certain residence permits online in many cases, without visiting the police. The new system, called HOT (Heldigital Oppmøteløsning), has been rolling out across selected police districts since May 5, 2026.

For foreign nationals studying and working in Norway, this could speed up permit renewals and reduce unnecessary appointments, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

Who Can Use the New HOT System?

The digital service is only available to foreign nationals who:

• Are renewing an existing permit from within Norway.
• Hold a Norwegian digital identity, such as eID or BankID.
• Live in a police district where the HOT system has been introduced.

The new platform works alongside Norway’s existing application process. It does not replace it.

Who Still Needs the Traditional Process?

Many applicants will still have to follow the regular application route, including:

• Indians applying from outside Norway.
• Workers entering Norway for short-term or ad hoc assignments.
• Applicants changing from one permit category to another.

These applicants must continue applying through a Norwegian consular post or, where available, have their employer, client, or legal representative submit the application through a Priority Service Centre.

What This Means for Foreign Professionals

India has a growing number of professionals, researchers, and students living in Norway. Those already settled with a Norwegian digital identity may find renewals less time-consuming as the new system simplifies identity verification with the police.
