Iran chabahar port: The US on Thursday announced that it would withdraw the discount given in the 2018 sanctions for operations at the Chabahar port in Iran from September 29. This is part of Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran. This decision of America is expected to create major challenges for strategic and economic interests in this region of India. Chabahar port is built with the help of India.
The exemption given under the Iran’s Anti-Extension and Anti-Dissemination Act (IFCA) allowed India and other countries to continue the port without US punishment. The State Department said that it is part of its widespread efforts to abolish the Iranian regime and its military activities to disrupt the illegal financial network that nurture.
Chabahar port is strategically important for India
Chabahar Port is strategically important for India. It gives India a trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. The goods go to Chabahar port from India. From here it is transported to the countries of Afghanistan and Central Asia.
What will be the impact on India by withdrawing the discounts by America?
India is in trouble due to the cancellation of exemption by the US. On 13 May 2024, New Delhi signed its first long -term foreign port agreement. It is a 10 -year agreement for the operation of Chabahar port in partnership with Iran’s port and maritime organization. Under this, Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) has promised to invest about $ 12 million (Rs 1058 crore). Along with this, it has also been planned to raise an additional loan of $ 250 million (Rs 2204 crore) for infrastructure around the port.
The Chabahar for India is more than the business center. New Delhi first proposed to develop Chabahar in 2003. This gives India a way to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia without depending on Pakistan. It also connects to the international north-south transport corridor connecting India to Russia and Europe. This port has already been used to assist wheat and other essential items to Afghanistan.
The Bharat Chabahar port project managed to keep the project out of the scope of restrictions imposed by President Trump in his first term in 2018. In view of its importance for Afghanistan, the US State Department had given ‘exemption’ from some restrictions related to the development of Chabahar port and the railway related to it.
