New Delhi: A day after sacking Bruno Lage, Portuguese giants Benfica announced Jose Mourinho as their manager on Thursday.
Club president Rui Costa made the announcement after Lage was removed after their shock Champions League defeat against Qarabag on Tuesday.
The 62-year-old returns to management a month after being dismissed by Turkish side Fenerbahce following their defeat in Champions League play-offs to Benfica.
The widely-travelled Mourinho began his head coach career with Benfica in 2000 but left after only 10 games following a dispute with the club president.
Benfica are sixth in the the Primeira Liga, five points behind leaders Porto, but have a game in hand, as under Lage they had lost only once game across all competitions this season.
Mourinho will be in the dugout for the first time at the Lisbon-based club is on Saturday in an away game against 17th-placed AVS.
