The atmosphere was filled with suspense and tension when Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, in his speech, mentioned a conversation he had with a student. Without taking anyone’s name, Rahul Gandhi made such a comment which forced the ruling party MPs to stand up from their seats. He said that a student had described three categories of people in the society—”students, idiots and blind devotees who follow these idiots.” This one word laid the foundation for a major conflict within the House.

Huge uproar over the word ‘idiot’: Kiren Rijiju’s sharp retort and demand to remove it from the record
As soon as Rahul Gandhi used the word ‘idiot’ repeatedly, MPs from the treasury bench (ruling party) turned red with anger and sloganeering started in the House. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju adopted a very aggressive stance and intervened in the middle of Rahul Gandhi’s speech. Rijiju objected in strong words, saying, “Rahul Gandhi is continuously using unparliamentary words. This should be immediately removed from the records of the House.” However, seeing the controversy growing, Rahul Gandhi clarified, “I am not saying this to any particular person. I did not use that word for anyone, I just said that this category also exists in the society.” But the suspense increased when he added that “Since he is trying to pretend to be an idiot god, he has to create a big image for himself.”

Question on Amit Shah’s absence: “Home Minister does not have the courage to sit here”
This war of words took a more frightening turn when Rahul Gandhi directly targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Questioning the absence of the Home Minister in the House, the Congress leader made a very sharp and controversial claim. Rahul Gandhi thundered, “The Home Minister does not have the courage to sit here today because he is scared.” After this he made an allegation which stunned the entire House. Referring to the police action during student protests, he claimed that Amit Shah had “approved” and “ordered” the firing on student protesters.
