Sawan 2026: The month of Sawan is considered very special for the devotion and worship of Lord Shiva. In this month, Shiva devotees perform puja, Jalabhishek and Rudrabhishek to please Lord Bholenath. At the same time, many devotees also keep fast on Monday of Sawan. According to religious belief, by observing fast on Sawan Monday, one gets the blessings of Lord Shiva and wishes are fulfilled. In the year 2026, the holy month of Saavan will start from 30th July and continue till 28th August. During this period there will be a total of four Sawan Mondays. Along with worship, special care is taken about food and drink during Monday’s fast. What can be eaten during the fast of Sawan Monday?
Banana, apple, pomegranate, papaya, orange, grapes and other seasonal fruits can be consumed during the fast.

Many people also consume milk, curd and buttermilk during the fast of Sawan Monday. There is also a tradition of offering milk to Lord Shiva.
Sago
Sabudana Khichdi or Sabudana Vada is very much liked during the fast. Rock salt can be used to make it.
buckwheat and water chestnut flour
During the fast, instead of wheat and other grains, roti, puri or pakoda made from buckwheat or water chestnut flour is eaten. It is considered a food suitable for fasting.
Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
Potatoes and sweet potatoes are also consumed during the fast. They can be eaten boiled or prepared with mild spices. Rock salt is used to make these during fasting.

What should not be eaten during the fast of Sawan Monday?

Generally, wheat, rice, pulses and other grains are not consumed during the fast of Sawan Monday.

There is a tradition of using rock salt instead of normal salt during fasts. Therefore, rock salt is used in the food prepared during the fast.
Avoiding onion and garlic
Onion and garlic are also not consumed during the fast of Sawan Monday. During the fast, emphasis is laid on keeping the food satvik.
distance from non-vegetarian food
People observing fast on Monday in Sawan do not consume non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish and eggs. According to religious beliefs, eating satvik food and exercising restraint in Saavan is considered auspicious.
