The central government is preparing to make major changes in the smart meter checking system to resolve the complaints of electricity consumers in a more transparent manner. After the proposed system is implemented, government recognized private labs will also be able to test smart meters.
The aim of this step is to reduce the increasing disputes regarding electricity bills and strengthen consumer confidence.
How is smart meter checked now?
In the present system, if a consumer feels that his smart meter is giving wrong readings, then it gets tested only in the lab of the concerned electricity distribution company (DISCOM). Many times consumers question the fairness of this process and demand an independent investigation.
The government is now preparing to change this system to allow testing to Government Approved Test Centers also. Private institutions can also be included in these centres, provided they meet the standards and rules set by the government.
