Japan Fires Back at China Criticism: What did Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi say while responding to China’s allegations? Why is tension increasing between Japan and China regarding Taiwan? What is Shangri-La Dialogue and why did China’s absence become a topic of discussion in this conference?
Amidst the ongoing debate on security and military balance in Asia, Japan has openly responded to China’s allegations. At the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue security conference held in Singapore, Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi clearly stated that his country will continue to strengthen its defense capabilities and calling it a “new militarism” is beyond the facts. This statement of Koizumi has come at a time when China is continuously criticizing Japan’s new defense policies. Beijing claims that Tokyo is gradually moving towards military expansion, which could lead to instability in the entire Asia-Pacific region.
Japan’s path changed after World War II
After its defeat in World War II, Japan adopted a pacifist policy for decades. Its constitution had set many limits on military activities. But the changing global security environment, North Korea’s missile tests and China’s growing military power forced Japan to rethink its strategy. In recent years, Japan has increased its defense budget, invested in new military technologies and also strengthened its security cooperation with the US. This process appears to be accelerating under the leadership of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Targeted China without naming it
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Koizumi did not directly name China, but his hint was clear. He said that there is a country in the world which has a large number of nuclear weapons and strategic bomber aircraft, whereas Japan does not have such weapons. Despite this, Japan is said to be a country moving towards militarism, which is surprising.
According to defense experts, China currently has more than 600 nuclear weapons and aims to increase this number to about 1,000 in the coming years. This is the reason why the concerns of many countries regarding regional security are continuously increasing.
Taiwan became a major cause of tension
Tensions between Japan and China are not limited to defense budget or military preparedness. The issue of Taiwan has become the most sensitive topic in the relations between the two countries. In November last year, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hinted that Japan might consider intervening if China took military action against Taiwan. After this statement, Beijing gave a strong reaction. China considers Taiwan a part of itself, while Taiwan operates itself as a self-governing democratic entity. The role of America and its allies on this issue also makes regional politics more complex.
Japan’s concern over China’s military activities
Koizumi also said at the conference that China is continuously increasing its military strength, but there is not enough transparency about its military activities and capabilities.
He said that it is a matter of concern for Japan that rapid military expansion is taking place in the region, while complete information about it is not available. According to him, in view of the security challenges, it is a natural step for Japan to strengthen its defense preparedness. The Defense Minister also reiterated that Japan’s global identity has been that of a peace-loving and responsible nation and some political allegations cannot change that image.
What is the Shangri-La Dialogue?
The Shangri-La Dialogue is considered to be the most important defense and security conference in Asia. It is organized every year in Singapore, where defense ministers, military officers, strategic experts and policy makers from across the world come together on one platform. This year representatives from about 45 countries participated in the conference. Interestingly, China sent a relatively small delegation and for the second year in a row, its Defense Minister Dong Jun did not attend the event. Koizumi said he regretted not being able to meet the Chinese Defense Minister this time, as dialogue between the two countries is important for regional stability.
Asia’s security politics at a new turn
The increasing rhetoric between Japan and China is not just a dispute between the two countries. This could have an impact on the security of the entire Indo-Pacific region. On one hand, China is expanding its military power, while on the other hand, Japan is busy strengthening its defense preparedness. In such a situation, the direction in which Asia’s security politics will go in the coming years will be included in the most important strategic discussions of the world.
