Gulveer Singh clinched silver medal in 10,000m race: In the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, India’s star athlete Gulveer Singh performed brilliantly and won the silver medal in the men’s 10,000 meter race. The journey of Asian Games bronze medalist Gulveer is no less than a film script, where once his dream was only to get promotion in the Indian Army and today he is hoisting the country’s tricolor at the international level. He won the silver medal with a brilliant time of 27:49.78, which is also India’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games 10,000 meter race.
A star emerged from a farmer family of Aligarh
Gulveer Singh was born on 1 June 1998 in an ordinary farmer family in Sirsa village of Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. Growing up in a village with a rich tradition of patriotism, Gulveer had initially never thought of making athletics a professional career. He used to run on the village trails and roads just so that he could pass the Indian Army recruitment exam. His hard work bore fruit in the year 2018 and he got recruited as a soldier in the 23 Grenadiers Unit of the Indian Army.
At the time of joining the army, Gulveer’s only intention was to get promotion to the post of Havildar through track and field. However, during his posting in Arunachal Pradesh in 2019, he participated in the inter-unit cross-country race for the first time and won it. His performance in this race caught the attention of Yunus Khan, coach of the long-distance running program of Pune-based Army Sports Institute (ASI).
Journey of Army Sports Institute and Track Running
Coach Yunus Khan brought Gulveer to Pune the same year, where he got professional and formal coaching for the first time. After this, after winning another inter-unit race in the year 2021, Gulveer became fully prepared for track running. On the basis of hard work in the last 7 years, Gulveer has won many medals at national and international events. Now he has made India proud in the Commonwealth Games also.
