On Tuesday, a strong earthquake of 7.1 magnitude was felt in Japan. After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning. The administration is on full alert in view of possible high sea waves. Meanwhile, many videos have surfaced on social media, showing people’s panic during the earthquake and scenes of damage caused at different places.
The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km from the ground.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers from the ground in the Kumamoto region. The agency has recorded its intensity as 7.1. Whereas the US Geological Survey (USGS) has reported the intensity of this earthquake as 6.8. Different agencies record earthquake intensity based on their own parameters, so there may be some difference in the data.

Many aftershocks were felt after the earthquake
Following the main earthquake, several aftershocks were also recorded in the same area. According to JMA, tremors of 4.5 and 4.2 magnitude were also felt. Officials have appealed to people to remain alert and follow safety instructions.
Videos of damage surfaced on social media
After the earthquake, videos were shared rapidly on many places including social media platform X. A video shows the effects of strong tremors around the famous Kumamoto Castle. At the same time, in a video of a departmental store, goods kept on a high shelf are seen falling. Apart from this, videos of small-scale landslides in some areas of Kumamoto city have also surfaced, in which dust and debris are seen flying.

There was chaos among people in malls, stores and airports.

Prime Minister’s Office gave necessary instructions to officials
In view of the earthquake and its aftershocks, the Prime Minister’s Office of Japan has instructed the concerned authorities to take immediate action. Officials have been asked to assess the damage in the affected areas as soon as possible and intensify relief and rescue operations in coordination with the local administration. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, it has been said that work should be done in coordination with local governments and the safety of the people affected by the disaster should be given the highest priority. In the instructions, emphasis has been laid on rescue operations, taking people to safe places and leaving no stone unturned in relief operations.
