Indian Air Force Tejas: An incident that took place in February this year regarding India’s indigenous fighter aircraft LCA Tejas was presented on social media as if the most important fighter jet of the Indian Air Force had completely failed. Pro-Pakistan social media accounts and some foreign analysts took this as an opportunity to question India’s defense capability. But the detailed information now revealed presents a completely different picture from these claims.
What happened at Naliya airbase?
On February 7, 2026, a Tejas Mk1 aircraft overshot the runway after landing and skidded on soft ground during a routine training flight at Naliya airbase in Gujarat. During the incident, the pilot used the Martin-Baker Zero-Zero Ejection Seat as per safety standards and ejected safely. He suffered only minor injuries.
Initial reports described it as a “crash” and a “design failure”, but later investigation found no evidence that the aircraft’s original design was flawed.

Pakistan spread propaganda, HAL responded
After the incident, it was claimed on social media that the entire Tejas fleet has been grounded and the aircraft is no longer fit for use. Some Pakistani defense analysts also questioned the capability of Indian engineering and pilots.
However, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) clarified that it was only a technical incident on the ground and not a major crash. The company also said that Tejas has a strong safety record and has completed thousands of safe flights over the years.
Preparation of Tejas Mk1A continues, waiting to get engine
According to defense sector reports, HAL has about 20 Tejas Mk1A aircraft ready, in which only the engines are yet to be installed. The engines are to be supplied from General Electric of America. At present the biggest challenge is the complete integration of radar, electronic warfare systems and weapons.

The Indian Air Force aims to make the first Tejas Mk1A squadron operational by March 2027. Experts believe the delay is related to technical integration, not the design or reliability of the aircraft.
For India, Tejas is not just a fighter aircraft but a symbol of self-reliance in the defense sector. In such a situation, it is being considered beyond the facts to attribute any one technical incident to the failure of the entire program.
