New Delhi [भारत]July 27 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday lauded the stellar achievements of Indian athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, including Mirabai Chanu’s gold, Rishikant Singh and Raja Muthupandi’s silver, and Jhandu Kumar’s bronze. He congratulated the athletes, their families and coaches and praised their dedication for making the nation proud.
Birla said during the ongoing monsoon session, “I am happy to inform the House that Indian athletes have performed brilliantly in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category, while Rishikant Singh and Raja Muthupandi have won silver medals. Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar has also brought laurels to the country by winning a bronze medal.”
He further said, “On behalf of the House, I extend my hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the athletes, their families and their coaches for their remarkable achievements.”
India’s dominance in weightlifting
Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu led India’s campaign on the fourth day of the Commonwealth Games 2026, winning a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. The country’s weightlifters put up a memorable performance and won three medals, taking India higher in the medal table.
Weightlifting remained India’s biggest source of success, as Chanambam Rishikant Singh won a silver medal in the men’s 60 kg category, followed by Raja Muthupandi with another silver medal in the men’s 65 kg event. This trio ensured that India ended the day with three medals, all of which came from weightlifting.
Meanwhile, Jhandu Kumar won the bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. The 28-year-old, competing in Group B, recorded his best lift of 190 kg in his second attempt, which earned him 130.9 points. (ANI)
