In a significant move toward greater inclusivity and empathy among children, Mattel has officially launched its first-ever Barbie doll with Type 1 Diabetes . Announced by a company vice-president, this new doll was developed in partnership with the global non-profit Breakthrough T1D. This introduction of a Barbie doll with Type 1 Diabetes marks an important step in Mattel’s commitment to inclusivity and representation. Barbie helps shape children’s early perceptions of the world, and by reflecting medical conditions like T1D, Mattel ensures more kids can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.
The new Barbie doll is thoughtfully equipped with realistic features to portray Type 1 Diabetes management. She sports a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) on her arm, secured by a pink heart-shaped medical tape, alongside a phone displaying an app to track blood sugar levels. Additionally, she wears an insulin pump attached to her waist, a small, wearable device that automates insulin dosing. Her blue polka-dot top and matching skirt are inspired by global diabetes awareness symbols.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Often diagnosed in childhood, individuals with T1D must constantly monitor their glucose levels and administer insulin daily. This new doll aims to normalize these daily routines for children living with the condition and educate others.
