New Delhi [भारत]July 27 (ANI): Congress Lok Sabha MP KC Venugopal on Monday intensified the opposition’s attack on the Center over alleged police action against student protesters. He demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah come to Parliament and clarify the alleged use of pellet guns in Delhi and AK-47 in Bihar during protests over examination irregularities.
Speaking to ANI amid continuous opposition protests in Parliament, Venugopal questioned the Home Minister’s absence from the debate. “Kiren Rijiju is not the leader of our party. He is representing the Government of India. What kind of government? Now the Government of India is using AK-47 against students in Bihar, pellet guns against students in Delhi. This government is sitting there. He is the representative of that government. Who cares about him? Our demand is very clear: Where is the Home Minister? Where is he hiding? This has to be answered! He has to come to the Lok Sabha and tell that AK-47 has been ordered in Bihar. Who gave it, who ordered the pellet guns in Delhi! They have to answer!… People feel that they are completely responsible for all these atrocities,” Venugopal said.
‘This is sheer cruelty’: Manish Tewari
Congress MP Manish Tewari also questioned the alleged use of force against unarmed protesters, arguing that established legal procedures for crowd control were not followed. Tiwari told ANI, “The basic thing is this: Is it appropriate to use pellet guns and AK-47 against unarmed and non-violent protesters? The simple answer is that it is completely inappropriate. The Supreme Court has laid down a Standard Operating Procedure to deal with the protests. But the way pellet guns were allegedly used against unarmed students and videos are emerging from Bihar in which a constable “With an AK-47, it’s sheer cruelty. It’s inhumane, and it’s an atrocity.”
Bill called ‘Band-Aid’ solution
Criticizing the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Tiwari termed it a “band-aid” solution. He said, “If the government was serious, it would have brought a comprehensive law to deal with the challenges faced by India’s education sector. This bill has been brought to calm the public anger after police violence. There is nothing in this bill.”
The remarks came after Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh introduced the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha amid loud sloganeering by opposition members, following which the House was adjourned till 2 pm. The Bill aims to strengthen the legal framework against paper leaks by introducing fast-track courts, time-bound investigations and trials, enhanced punishment, special task forces and special public prosecutors.
