Stand-in head coach VVS Laxman has advised young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi to work on his fitness. Vaibhav, who became the ‘Player of the Series’ against Zimbabwe, had scored 81 runs in 49 balls. Laxman praised his talent.
India stand-in head coach VVS Laxman believes that young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi must continue to improve his fitness to harness his full potential and take his game to the next level.
Vaibhav’s brilliant performance against Zimbabwe
Suryavanshi showcased his tremendous talent when he scored a brilliant inning of 81 runs off 49 balls in India’s 35-run win over Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday. His match-winning innings helped him become the top run-scorer of the series with 151 runs in three matches, earning him his first Player of the Series award.
His efforts with the bat in Zimbabwe follow an extraordinary performance for India in the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup earlier this year, which showcased the 15-year-old’s full capabilities and hints at what the future may hold for the hard-hitting left-hander.
Laxman gave advice to improve fitness
And while the cricket world is still in awe of Suryavanshi’s efforts with the bat, Laxman has identified one area that the youngster must work on if he wants to continue his journey of progress.
“One area we want him to improve on is his overall fitness,” Laxman said, according to the ICC website. He further added, “He is a very young boy. He himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game. Even today, when he got injured (while attempting a diving catch by running in from deep square leg), he still wanted to be on the field. It was our physio who asked him to come out. Such is his eagerness and dedication to contribute to the team in every possible way.”
Did wonders in U-19 World Cup and IPL too
Laxman has played a key role in Suryavanshi’s rapid rise, having overseen India’s victorious Under-19 World Cup campaign earlier this year as BCCI’s head of cricket.
The young talented player performed wonders with the bat, finishing as the top run-scorer of the tournament with 439 runs and winning the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award. That brilliant campaign marked another milestone in Suryavanshi’s remarkable ascension, which also includes a number of stellar performances for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League over the last two seasons.
