66 dead due to floods in Assam, BJP’s big relief campaign
Giving an update on the serious flood situation in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday confirmed that the death toll has risen to 66. Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister also announced a massive relief campaign led by the state BJP to provide essential clothes to people in the worst-hit districts.
Talking about the deaths, CM Sarma said, “So far, 66 people have died due to floods in the state, including one person from Guwahati urban area.” Giving details of the relief work, the Chief Minister appealed to the party workers to make collective efforts to help the people in distress. He said, “I appeal to all BJP workers of Assam to join the flood relief work. On behalf of Assam state BJP, we have decided to give 2 lakh mekhela-chadors to 2 lakh women affected by floods and clothes to 2 lakh children. For this we need Rs 12 crore.”
Appeal for donations from party workers
To meet the financial target for this initiative, the CM outlined a systematic donation process for party members. Sarma said, “I appeal to those BJP workers who want to donate less than Rs 2,000 to give this amount to their local MLAs, and those who want to donate more than Rs 2,000 can deposit their checks in the party’s account number, and we will give the account number on social media.”
He expressed confidence that this amount would be raised soon with the support of party members within and outside the state. He said, “We have set a target of collecting Rs 12 crore for this. BJP workers will help in collecting this amount. BJP workers from different parts of Assam and outside Assam have assured us of help. We are hopeful that within the next 4-5 days we will collect this amount and will be able to help the flood affected people of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat districts.”
Participated in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast program in Azara taluk area. Considering the significance of the day, which coincides with Kargil Vijay Diwas, the CM paid heartfelt tribute to the martyred soldiers. The CM said, “Today we listened to PM’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ in Azara taluk area with the local people. Today is Kargil Vijay Diwas, and I pay my tribute to the martyrs of the Kargil war. I also pay my tribute to the son of Assam, Captain Jintu Gogoi, who was martyred in the Kargil war.” (ANI)
