New Delhi [भारत]July 25 (ANI): According to Wedmigood’s ‘Destination Wedding Report 2026’, 30-32 percent of all weddings in India will be destination weddings by 2028. This is higher than the current figure of almost one in four marriages. This is because couples are now preferring smaller and experience-based celebrations.
The report states that expenditure on destination weddings has increased by 8 percent year-on-year. The budget of an average destination wedding has reached Rs 58 lakh, reflecting the growing preference for personalized experiences. The average budget of a destination wedding held within the country is Rs 58 lakh, while the average budget of a destination wedding held abroad is more than Rs 1.5 crore.
More emphasis on experience and personalization
According to the report, 42 percent of couples are now preferring small and experience-based ceremonies instead of big weddings. Destination weddings are now becoming longer than before. Where before 2020 it used to last for an average of 1.8 days, now it has become 3.2 days. Couples are now placing more emphasis on guest experience, exclusive dining, wellness activities and celebrations that last for days.
“Indian weddings are undergoing a sea change. Today’s couples are investing not just in ceremonies, but in creating meaningful experiences that bring family and friends together,” said Mehak Shahani, Co-Founder, Wedmigood. He further added that destination weddings are now focusing on personalization, guest engagement and memorable experiences and with these changing expectations, budgets are also increasing.
Sri Lanka is becoming a favorite wedding destination
The report describes Sri Lanka as one of the fastest growing international destination wedding markets for Indian couples. According to the report, 44 percent of Indian couples prefer destinations with a flying distance of two to four hours. Indian wedding bookings in Sri Lanka are estimated to grow by 20-25 percent annually.
Proximity to India, excellent hospitality infrastructure and diverse experiences are contributing to its growing attraction. The report expects international destination weddings, especially in Asia, to continue to grow in the future due to increased demand for short-haul luxury travel and experience-based ceremonies. The report said Sri Lanka will continue to be one of the main beneficiaries of this trend, further strengthening its position as a preferred destination for Indian wedding travelers. (ANI)
