New Delhi: Apple has chosen Sabih Khan as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), and the move is a significant one in terms of leadership at a crucial period in the life of the tech giant. Khan, a 30-year veteran of Apple, replaces Jeff Williams, who will retire later this year after almost three decades at the company. The shift is prompted by the fact that Apple is experiencing declining sales of iPhones, regulatory pressures across the world, and also manufacturing setbacks caused by the trade war between the US and China.
Bloomberg reported Khan, an Apple executive since 2019, will now lead the global operations of the company. He has also been recognised to have toughened up the supply chain of Apple as well as sustainability. In this promotion, Khan also has the responsibility of overseeing new business units like AppleCare, and this enhances his role in the company.
Jeff Williams to step down after 27 years
Williams will work in a transitional role until his retirement, overseeing the design and health divisions of Apple. CEO Tim Cook hailed his long-time associate as the head of several of the company’s core efforts, such as Apple Watch and its health strategy. After Williams leaves the company, Cook is going to become the direct report of the design team.
Khan’s expanded role in Apple’s future
As the main strategist behind Apple, Khan has been instrumental in the establishment of the supply chain of the corporation as well as its manufacturing base in the US. Cook also emphasisedthe effect that Khan had on the level of environmental sustainability whereby, under his leadership, Apple has managed to cut down its carbon footprint by more than 60 percent. Cook described Khan as a brilliant strategist and noted his leadership that focused on values.
The leadership change follows Apple facing increased regulatory scrutiny. The company is being investigated in the US and EU, potentially having to change its policies regarding the App Store and having to fight a legal case that can affect a big collaboration with Google. Meanwhile, Apple has been trying to offshore some of its production beyond China, and India is one of the most important centres.
Apple is determined to enhance its global performance with the appointment of Khan, along with responding to the changing market and policy dynamics. At a time when the firm is charting a new direction, his experience and leadership strategy will be instrumental in determining the future of Apple.
