The indigenous automakers, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have several new models planned for the Indian market, with a strong focus on SUV segment. In the highly competitive sub-4 metre SUV segment, Tata currently sells the Nexon and Punch with both ICE (internal combustion engine) and electric powertrain options. Meanwhile, Mahindra’s subcompact SUV lineup includes the XUV 3XO and Bolero Neo.
In 2026-2027, both carmakers will expand their sub-4 metre SUV portfolio with three new models – the Mahindra Vision S, Tata Scarlet and the next-generation Tata Nexon. Here’s a quick look at what these upcoming SUVs are expected to offer.
Mahindra Vision S
The production-ready is expected to stay true to its concept. It will feature a boxy silhouette, an upright stance and design elements such as the new six-slate grille, sleek LED headlamps, pronounced wheel arches, a panoramic sunroof, flush door handles, LED taillamp sand short overhangs.
The Vision S will be Mahindra’s first model to be based on the NU_IQ modular platform, which supports ICE, electric and hybrid powertrains. The SUV is expected to make its global debut in late 2026 or early 2027.
Tata Scarlet
Tata Motors is reportedly developing on a , based on a monocoque chassis. Codenamed Scarlet, the model is expected to share several design elements with the Sierra. While its too early to comment on its powertrain options, the Tata Scarlet is expected to be offered with one of three petrol engines – the Nexon’s 102bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol engine, Sierra’s 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine or the Curvv’s 125bhp, 1.2L petrol engine. Select variants will also be available with diesel engine options. As per reports, this new subcompact SUV is likely to hit roads in the second half of 2027.
New-Gen Tata Nexon
The will switch to a new platform and receive major structural updates. It’s also expected to feature an all-new design language, a more upmarket interior and several new features, while retaining the existing petrol and diesel engine options.
