Charles Leclerc delivered a commanding performance for Ferrari during Friday’s free practice sessions at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as the Scuderia wrapped up both FP1 and FP2 with one-two finishes.
Leclerc, at the wheel of a well-balanced SF-26, secured second place in FP2 behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton, underlining the team’s impressive early form at the Hungaroring.
Throughout the day, Leclerc demonstrated a strong combination of outright pace and consistency over longer runs. The Monegasque appeared immediately comfortable, extracting solid lap times and maintaining a competitive rhythm as Ferrari dominated the time sheets. With track position expected to be crucial at the notoriously tight Hungaroring, Leclerc and Ferrari focused on both qualifying simulations and race stints, aiming to maximise their performance for the rest of the weekend.
Despite the apparent advantage-Ferrari ended the day with a gap of half a second over their rivals-Leclerc remains cautious about overestimating the team’s lead. Speaking after Friday’s sessions, he emphasised the need for continued focus and relentless effort to convert this promising start into a successful qualifying and race result.
“Our performance looks good and that’s definitely a positive,” Leclerc stated while reflecting on Ferrari’s strong showing. “The weekend is still long, so we must stay focused and keep working hard to ensure we stay ahead tomorrow as well.”
Leclerc also downplayed the significance of the gap to the competition, predicting a much closer battle in qualifying. “I expect qualifying to be very tight. I don’t think the advantage we saw today over our rivals will be the same tomorrow, so we need to do a perfect job. If we can maintain the same feeling with the car, I’m confident we can have a good qualifying.”
Leclerc’s measured optimism and sharp focus are echoed by the team’s performance, which has sent a clear warning to their championship rivals. If the SF-26 maintains this level of competitiveness into Saturday, the Monegasque star will be well-positioned to fight for pole position and potentially challenge for victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
