New Delhi [भारत]July 24 (ANI): President Draupadi Murmu on Friday extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the 23rd Commonwealth Games 2026 being held in Glasgow, Scotland. He expressed confidence that the athletes will bring glory to the country.
President and Prime Minister congratulated
In a post on Twitter, the President said he is confident that Indian athletes will excel with their talent, determination and dedication. President Murmu wrote, “My best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the XXIII Commonwealth Games 2026 being held in Glasgow, Scotland. I am confident that you will make the nation proud with your talent, determination and dedication.”
He said the entire nation stands with the athletes as they strive for excellence and wished them success in their endeavors. She further added, “The entire nation stands with you as you strive for excellence. I wish you every success.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 and expressed confidence that the athletes will compete with passion, determination and the spirit of excellence and inspire millions of people across the country.
“My best wishes to the Indian contingent as the Commonwealth #Glasgow2026 Games begin. I am confident that our athletes will participate in the Games with passion, determination and a spirit of excellence. The skill and dedication of our athletes always inspires countless Indians,” PM Modi wrote in the ex-post.
India’s strong start in Glasgow
The Commonwealth Games 2026 is being held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, with India sending a contingent of over 120 athletes across eight able-bodied sports and five para sports as it looks to carry forward its rich legacy at the multi-sport event.
Mirabai Chanu led the Indian contingent as the flag bearer during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026 at the Hydro Stadium in Glasgow.
India also made a strong start to their campaign, with Commonwealth champions Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki winning over Malta in the women’s singles bowls, while Putul Sonowal stunned world champion Ryan Bester in the men’s singles.
The Indian pair dominated the opening set 7-1, but Malta came back to win the second set and force a tie-break. Pinky’s last bowl proved decisive and India secured victory.
Sonowal won the first set 5-4 in their Section D opener, which was followed by a 7-3 win by Bester in the second set. There are six players in this section, in which the winners of all four sections will reach the semi-finals.
Putul will now face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands in his second men’s singles Section D match, while Pinky and Rupa will face South Africa in their next women’s pairs encounter. Both matches are scheduled to be held on Friday.
At Glasgow 2026, the tournament begins with sectional group play, with players and teams competing in a round-robin format for a place in the knockout stages. (ANI)
