Indian wrestler and three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s victory over Nishu in the Asian Games 2026 trials sparked a controversy surrounding the outcome of a closely contested quarterfinal bout at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday, May 30.
Vinesh Phogat returned to the mat for the first time since the Paris 2024 Olympics, following a highly publicized legal battle to secure her participation. The veteran wrestler was allowed by the Supreme Court to participate in the trials for the Asian Games after she was ruled initially ineligible by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for failing to meet recent domestic competition criteria.
Though the WFI allowed Vinesh to participate in the 50 kg category, which was the weight class she competed in at the Paris 2024 Olympics, she expressed a strong preference to return to her original 53 kg category for the Asian Games trials. However, the Haryana MLA was eventually allowed to compete in her preferred category.

Vinesh Phogat’s Bout with Nishu Becomes Controversial
Vinesh Phogat secured her semifinal berth with a victory over Nishu in the quarterfinal, inching closer to the Asian Games 2026, though the match was marred by significant controversy and chaos. The bout was characterized by heated disputes over refereeing decisions, technical failures, and administrative tension.
Vinesh’s quarterfinal win descended into chaos and technical disorder after she, trailing 0–5, looked poised for a pinfall of her opponent, Nishu, only for the referee to halt the action to award her four points instead. This sparked outrage from Vinesh’s camp, with her husband Somvir Rathee throwing the water bottle in protest of the officiating.
Although the veteran Indian wrestler’s team successfully challenged the initial ruling to take a 6–5 lead, further controversy erupted regarding the arm throw, which her camp felt deserved four points instead of two, and she lost. Additionally, the official review monitor stopped working entirely during a critical stage of the match, leading to further confusion and delays.

Though Vinesh secured a 7–6 victory after maintaining her composure during the final seconds, her opponent, Nishu, was visibly heartbroken, remaining on the mat in tears and refusing to shake her hand with the three-time Olympian or referee. Vinesh offered a consoling tap on Nishu’s back before departing the mat.

Nishu’s defeat to Vinesh ended her campaign at the Asian Games 2026 selection trials and thus failed to qualify for the multi-sport quadrennial continental event, which will take place in Japan in September-October.
