PM Modi Paper Leak: Just hours before the nationwide massive protest by the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a step that increased the suspense in the political atmosphere of the country. On the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, when the entire nation was sleeping, lights were burning in the government corridors of Delhi. A special team of officials was working through the night to draft an extremely stringent law against exam paper leaks. The Prime Minister himself revealed this secret preparation in a video message released late at night. “The departments worked tirelessly and handed me a draft late at night,” he said. But the question is, what is there in this new law which was prepared in such secrecy and haste?
Fast-track court and ‘cabinet’ litmus test: Will the culprits be saved?
In his address, Prime Minister Modi shared the pain of lakhs of students and their families of the country and called it a very serious issue. He made it clear that sending the culprits to jail in the last two and a half months was just a beginning, the real fight is to improve the system. The government put in all its might and conducted re-examination for about 22 lakh students in a short time, the results of which were declared on July 19. But to pacify the agitators, the PM announced further strict steps. This new bill includes provisions for the formation of fast-track courts and harshest punishment for the culprits.

Roadmap ready for fast-track courts and strict laws
The Prime Minister revealed that he had directed the departments concerned to draft a fast-track court for paper leak cases. The officials worked till late night to prepare the draft, which is to be placed before the Union Cabinet on Friday. If the cabinet approves, the government will try to get this bill passed in the second week of Parliament by introducing it soon. The proposed law is likely to include provisions for stringent punishment, speedy investigation and time-bound trials for crimes like paper leaks.
Why did CJP and opposition not agree?
Despite the Prime Minister’s announcement, CJP and opposition parties called it an incomplete step. He says that the government did not give any clear answer to the demand for fixing accountability and resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the government on social media and alleged that the education system has suffered serious damage. He reiterated the three main demands of the students – Dharmendra Pradhan should be removed, an apology should be made to the students and the action taken against the protesters should be investigated.

What answer did the government give?
On behalf of the government, Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the Prime Minister’s decision and said that the proposal of fast-track courts and strict laws will prove to be a decisive step against those who are playing with the future of the youth. BJP leaders also said that the government will not back down from any investigation and the culprits will not be spared at any cost.

Even though the government has rolled the dice of fast-track courts and strict laws, the fire of the movement does not seem to be cooling down. CJP and opposition leaders have rejected this entire announcement and termed it an ‘election stunt’. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi directly attacked the Prime Minister on social media platform X. Launching a scathing attack, Rahul Gandhi said, “It is you who have caused the greatest harm to the future of our youth. You have allowed our education system to be completely taken over and destroyed.” The demands of the opposition and students are clear and firm—Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should be immediately dismissed, the government should apologize to the students, and action should be taken against those who lathi-charged the protesters.
Wangchuk’s fast was broken, but was the threat of nationwide violence averted?
Another most shocking aspect of this entire incident came to light when activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was fighting for life and death in the hospital for 26 days, broke her fast. Now the biggest focus is on the Union Cabinet meeting on Friday and the bill proposed in Parliament on Monday, the first day of next week.
