Kaal Bhairav is worshiped as Kotwal (protector) of Kashi, which is considered a fierce form of Lord Shiva. But, why is they called Kotwal of Kashi? This belief is mentioned in mythology. Skanda Purana mentions Kaal Bhairav, the form of Lord Shiva.
According to the religious recognition of Kotwal of Kotwal in Kashi, Kaal Bhairav originated when there was a dispute between Lord Brahma and Vishnu to tell himself better than others. Angry, Kaal Bhairav cut the head of Brahma Dev, which led to the blame of Brahma. Not only this, one head of Brahma was cut off from his hand. To get rid of sin, he reached Kashi, where Brahma’s head was separated from his hand by taking a dip in the Ganges. This place became famous as ‘Kapal Mochan Tirtha’.

What does Jyotishacharyakashi’s Jyotishacharya and Pandit Rajendra Pandey said, “There is religious belief that to get the permission of Kashi Vishwanath, first of all, you should see Kotwal of Kashi i.e. Kaal Bhairav. Darshan gets rid of many problems. The court, disease-disease or any other problem, Baba gets freedom from these problems and relief.”
Every year on Bhairav Ashtami and Mahashivaratri, a huge crowd of devotees throng here. Apart from this, a large number of people arrive every Sunday and Tuesday. For the Kashi residents, they are not only the protector, but also the deity who destroys sins. They also calculate bad deeds.
Kaal Bhairav loves Kotwal of Kala Vastrakashi, mustard oil, vada made of urad, blue garland, black cloth, which devotees reach for him. At the same time, there are many dogs near the temple, who are rides of Kaal Bhairav. After worshiping, devotees feed them other things including barfi, milk, rabri and biscuits. It is believed that Baba is pleased and blessed.
