New Delhi [भारत]July 23 (ANI): An important legislative debate is set to take place in the Lok Sabha today, as the government introduces the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 for consideration and passing.
Clash between government and opposition on Supreme Court Judge Bill
Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is scheduled to introduce the bill, which aims to further amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. Along with this legislative move, a statutory motion will also be moved by opposition members Saugata Roy, NK Premachandran and advocate Dean Kuriakose. They wish to express the House’s disapprobation of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance promulgated by the President on May 16, 2026. As per the revised agenda, both statutory proposals and bills will be taken up together.
PAC will present report on ‘Dhanush’ cannon and ammunition
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is also going to present several important reports today. Committee members KC Venugopal and Dharmendra Yadav will present the 48th report related to the delay in the production of electronically enhanced 155 mm/45 caliber gun system ‘Dhanush’. Additional reports of the PAC will cover the significant loss of over Rs 62 crore caused by the management of defense offsets and replacement of defective ammunition supplied to the Army by the Ordnance Factory, Badmal. The Committee will also highlight issues of omission in timely submission of Action Taken Notes on Audit Paragraphs.
Reports of other standing committees will also be presented
In other parliamentary proceedings, the Standing Committee on Finance led by Bhartrihari Mahtab and Jayant Kumar Roy will present its 36th report on ‘Securities Markets Code, 2025’. Also, the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is expected to present a report on regulation of packaged commodities, with emphasis on sugar content, especially in baby products, and modernization of the public distribution system by strengthening the technical database.
Other proceedings of the House
Later in the day, the House will hold its regular Question Hour and take up matters under Rule 377. Union Minister Ajay Tamta is going to table the papers for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the House. Further, the Secretary General will report a message from the Rajya Sabha regarding the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi is also expected to move a motion regarding the 17th report of the Trade Advisory Committee. (ANI)
