Producer Vashu Bhagnani candidly spoke about his damaged relationship with actor Varun Dhawan during a virtual media interaction. Referring to the 2020 film Coolie No. 1, Bhagnani claimed the project resulted in a financial setback of nearly Rs 27 crore for him. What hurt him more, however, was the lack of communication afterward. According to the producer, Varun never reached out to ask about his well-being despite their long-standing association. Bhagnani added that he still considers Varun like family and believes “children make mistakes,” even though the silence left him disappointed.
Legal Dispute Linked to ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’
The controversy stems from a lawsuit filed by Bhagnani in Bihar’s Katihar court regarding the upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, featuring Varun Dhawan. The producer has accused Tips Industries and others of using intellectual property connected to older Bollywood hits without proper authorisation. The issue reportedly intensified after the recreated version of the iconic song Chunari Chunari from Biwi No.1 was used. Bhagnani argued that while music rights may belong to Tips, permissions involving film-related intellectual property and recreations still required his involvement.
‘My Heart Is Broken’: Producer Says He Wants Peace
During the interaction, Bhagnani appeared emotional while addressing the ongoing conflict with David Dhawan and others linked to the case. He said he felt deeply hurt because people he once shared close relationships with were now portraying him negatively. Despite the bitterness, the producer insisted he is still willing to resolve the matter amicably. He claimed the dispute could be settled quickly if all parties agreed to sit together and talk. Bhagnani also alleged that the opposite side underestimated his response until the legal proceedings began.
