New Delhi [भारत]July 23 (ANI): Delhi University (DU) on Thursday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of setting up fast-track courts for cases related to exam paper leak and appealed to activist Sonam Wangchuk to end her indefinite fast in the interest of students.
In a post on Twitter, DU said the Centre’s decision reflects its commitment to safeguard the future of the country’s youth. “We welcome Prime Minister @narendramodi ji’s decision to set up a fast-track court to ensure exemplary punishment to those involved in the paper leak. This thoughtful decision shows that the Government of India places youth at the center of its functioning. In the spirit of goodwill and reconciliation, we sincerely request Shri Sonam Wangchuk ji to end his fast in the interest of our students. The future of our students is the future of our country,” University of Delhi said.
What is PM Modi’s announcement?
This statement comes after Prime Minister Modi announced that the government will set up fast-track courts to ensure quick and strict punishment to those responsible for the paper leak amid the growing protests over the alleged NEET paper leak.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister emphasized that the future and welfare of the country’s youth is the government’s top priority. “Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! We have decided to set up fast-track courts to ensure speedy and stringent punishment to those involved in the paper leak. Have directed the concerned officers and officials to take all necessary steps in this regard. This continues our series of steps to protect the interests of students. Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared,” PM Modi said.
Students protest continues
The announcement comes in the backdrop of intensified protests in Delhi and several other cities over the alleged NEET paper leak. The protesters are demanding resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, compensation of Rs 1 crore to the families of students who committed suicide allegedly due to the dispute, withdrawal of FIR against peaceful protesters and government assurance that no such cases will be registered against peaceful protesters in future.
Saurav Das, spokesperson of the protesting organization, described Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as “non-negotiable” and said the agitation would continue until the demands were met. Das also said he had spoken to Sonam Wangchuk, who is continuing her hunger strike despite being hospitalised, and both agreed that the movement should remain peaceful. He alleged that anti-social elements often infiltrate to derail the protests and appealed to the protesters to maintain peace.
According to Delhi Police, more than 118 policemen and around 60 protesters, including several senior officers, were injured in the clashes that broke out during the protests in the national capital. (ANI)
