The rules of Shraddha and Tarpan on Sarva Pitra Amavasya
- First of all, take a bath and sit at a clean and holy place, preferably, on the banks of a river.
- Take rice in your hand, remember your fathers and resolve to perform Shraddha.
- First of all, offer water including Akshat to the gods.
- Then, offer it in the name of your ancestors and offer water with black sesame and white flowers.
- Make Anjali with Kusha between your thumb and index finger.
- Offer water thrice by chanting the mantra “Om Pitrabhya Namah”.
- Pour the offered water at the root of the tree.
- After this, provide food to a Brahmin at home and donate as much as possible.

Mythology of Sarva Pitra or Mahalaya Amavasya
In the Mahabharata, after the death of Karna in the Kurukshetra war, his soul reached the divine world where he met Yama, the god of death. Yama told Karna that he would have to bear the fruits of his worldly deeds. Concerned to his ancestors suffering due to incomplete rituals, Karna requested Yama to allow him to return to Earth to fulfill these rituals. Impressed by Karna’s devotion, Yama allowed him to return to Earth for some time. During this time, Karna performed the rituals and offerings required to ensure the peace and liberation of the soul of his ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya rituals
- One day before Mahalaya Amavasya, clean the house thoroughly and prepare it for rituals.
- On this day, family members should observe fast and perform a tarpan ritual for their ancestors. After completing the ritual, offer the prepared food crows and wait for it to eat. After receiving the food of the crow, the whole family can join the food and share it with your friends and family.
- Many people visit nearby temples to seek blessings and pray for the peace of the soul of their ancestors.
