Top gainers and losers: The benchmark indices SENSEX and NIFTY50 closed in the green on Friday, May 22, amid buying in banking and financial services stocks.
The market opened flat with a positive bias but later surged amid a decline in global crude oil prices, easing geopolitical tensions, and more.
On Thursday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold stocks worth ₹1,891.21 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹1,891.21 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.
The SENSEX gained as much as 0.83% to hit an intraday high of 75,810.97. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 touched the session’s peak of 23,835.65.
On May 22, the SENSEX rose by 231.99 points or 0.31% to close at 75,415.35, while the NIFTY50 edged higher by 64.60 points or 0.27% to end at 23,719.30.
NIFTY50 top gainers and losers
The NIFTY50 pack was led by Trent, which closed 3.18% higher.
It was followed by Shriram Finance (2.98%), Axis Bank (2.69%), ICICI Bank (1.96%) and Wipro (1.62%), which were among the other top gainers.
On the contrary, the top losers included Max Healthcare (-6.24%), Sun Pharmaceuticals (-2.71%), ONGC (-1.99%), ITC (-1.95%), and Power Grid Corporation of India (-1.80%).
Shares of Max Healthcare fell as its earnings failed to enthuse investors. Its net profit at the end of the fourth quarter of the financial year 2025-26 came in at ₹342 crore, up 7.2% from ₹319 crore in the same period last year.
NIFTY MIDCAP 100 top gainers and losers
The NSE Midcap gauge ended at 61,389.30, marking an 88.70-point or 0.14% jump.
It was supported by gains in Astral (4.39%), Info Edge (4.13%), Dixon Technologies (4.10%), Max Financial Services (3.63%) and Tata Communications (3.20%), which were the top winners.
The stock of Info Edge advanced after it posted a 22.10% year-on-year (YoY) surge in its consolidated net profit to ₹565.79 crore in Q4 FY26, compared to ₹463.38 crore in the year-ago period.
On the flipside, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals fell by 5.94%. It was followed by Aurobindo Pharma (-5.09%), Premier Energies (-4.24%), One 97 Communications (-3.57%) and Coromandel International (-3.17%), which were among the top laggards.
NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers
The NIFTY Smallcap index declined by 26.85 points or 0.15% to close at 17,956.20.
Its top losers included Narayana Hrudayalaya (-4.28%), Pine Labs (-4.27%), Welcorp (-4.27%), Whirlpool of India (-3.70%) and Great Eastern Shipping Company (-3.63%).
On the contrary, JSW Cement (7.33%), Deepak Fertilizers And Petrochemicals Corporation (6.45%), Firstsource Solutions (6.43%), Kaynes Technology India (4.75%) and Meesho (2.91%) were among its top gainers.
