The observance of Ekadashi fast is sacred for Hindus. And today is the day of Indira Ekadashi. This Ekadashi is falling during Pitru Paksha.

Meaning, people will fast and also perform shraadh (shradh rituals). According to Hindu scriptures observing this fast removes Pitru Dosha (ancestral affliction), brings peace to the souls of forefathers and grants the devotees Moksha.

Vrat Katha Of Indira Ekadashi 2025

In the Satyuga, there was a king named Indrasena. He ruled a kingdom called Mahishmati. He was a benevolent king and his people were happy under his leadership. Once, Devarishi Narada Muni paid a visit to Indrasena’s court to convey his father’s message. The Devarishi informed Indrasena about his father’s earnest quest to attain Moksha and explained how he struggled to wash off the sins that he had committed during his lifetime.

Therefore, Narada Muni advised Indrasena to observe a vrat on the Ekadashi Tithi of Ashwin Krishna Paksha and pray to Lord Vishnu to liberate his father’s soul. Following this, Narada Muni also said that the King must pray to Lord Vishnu on the Dashami Tithi and pay obeisance to his dead ancestors in the afternoon (Madhyana). These prayers must be followed by a vrat on Ekadashi. Then, Narada Muni asked the King to appeal to Lord Vishnu to relieve his dead father from the Yama Loka. By observing the vrat, Indrasena succeeded in helping his father attain Moksha.
