But IPL 2026 has now joined a rare and significant list of seasons where both giants simultaneously failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Interestingly, every season where both CSK and MI failed to qualify has coincided with major shifts in IPL’s competitive landscape.
In 2022, Gujarat Titans announced themselves spectacularly by winning the title in their debut season.
In 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the trophy while other franchises continued narrowing the gap with the traditional powerhouses.
Now in 2026, the playoffs once again feature a league where newer teams and younger cores have begun overtaking legacy-heavy sides.
Franchises like Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals and others have built stronger scouting systems, smarter recruitment structures and more balanced squads.
IPL No Longer Depends on Legacy Alone
The biggest takeaway from IPL 2026 is how unforgiving the tournament has become. In earlier years, the aura and experience of CSK and MI often carried them through difficult situations. But modern IPL cricket demands greater adaptability, squad depth and consistent execution.
