2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections: BJP forms five key committees, Annamalai given prominent role

Chennai: In a strategic move to bolster its preparations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the formation of five specialized committees to streamline its campaign efforts. The decision was taken during a central committee meeting held in Chennai’s ECR area, presided over by BJP National Organization General Secretary B.L. Santosh. The meeting was attended by key leaders including Union Minister of State L. Murugan, State President Nainar Nagendran, former State President Annamalai, Tamilisai Soundararajan, and National President of BJP Mahila Morcha Vanathi Srinivasan.

The formation of these committees signals the BJP’s intensified focus on strengthening its presence and outreach in Tamil Nadu, where it is currently in alliance with the AIADMK. Despite speculation about his absence due to health reasons, Annamalai attended the meeting and was assigned a significant role, underscoring his continued influence within the party.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Committees

Each committee has been tailored to address specific aspects of electioneering and public engagement. Annamalai will lead a committee dedicated to analysing and communicating the current political situation in Tamil Nadu to the public. This role is seen as critical for shaping the party’s narrative and outreach strategy in the run-up to the elections.

Vanathi Srinivasan will head a committee focused on women’s development and educational advancement, particularly for girls from Scheduled Caste communities. Her team will work on amplifying schemes and messages related to women’s empowerment across the state. H. Raja has been entrusted with overseeing advertisements and social media campaigns, a key domain for mobilizing voter support in the digital age. Tamilisai Soundararajan will lead efforts to engage with influential community leaders and public figures, aiming to build broader support and alliances ahead of the 2026 elections.

Strategic Implementation and Oversight

B.L. Santosh has directed that the activities of these committees be reported to the party leadership on a monthly basis, ensuring accountability and coordinated progress. He emphasized the importance of effectively communicating the central government’s schemes and achievements to the people of Tamil Nadu and converting this outreach into electoral support. The committees are expected to operate across all regions of the state, addressing local issues while aligning with the party’s broader objectives.

The reappointment of Annamalai to a prominent role is particularly noteworthy, following his recent removal as state president. This move is interpreted as an effort to leverage his popularity and strategic acumen while maintaining organizational harmony.
