The journey of Chennai Super Kings finally ended before the playoffs. Amid ups and downs performance in IPL 2026, Chennai was eliminated from the tournament with a defeat in its last match. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chennai had to face a crushing defeat by 89 runs at the hands of Gujarat Titans in the last match. In this way, for the third consecutive season, the team was out of the title race in the league stage itself. But amidst this sorrow of defeat, BCCI has punished the entire team including the captain and deducted their salary.
Lost the match, made this mistake too
In the match played in Ahmedabad on Thursday, May 21, Gujarat defeated five-time champion Chennai by 89 runs. This was the last match of both the teams but while Gujarat had already reached the playoffs, this defeat CSK Was completely thrown out of the tournament. This was Chennai’s 8th defeat in 14 matches and with only 12 points the team is at 7th place in the table and can slip even lower.
But amidst the sorrow of this defeat, the players of Chennai have suffered a big blow. The team’s bowling was very slow in this match. Chennai bowlers spent more time than the stipulated time in completing their 20 overs. In such a situation, BCCI fined the entire team including CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for ‘slow over-rate’ due to violation of the code of conduct.
Big loss to captain, team also punished
Chennai had made this mistake for the second time this season, so this time not only the captain but also the team was punished. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was fined Rs 24 lakh for committing such a mistake for the second time. This was double punishment for Gaikwad because Rs 12 lakh had been deducted from his account at the time of the first mistake. Whereas all other players of playing-11 have been fined 25 percent of the match fee or Rs 6 lakh (whichever is less).
