Chaturmas 2026: Every year Chaturmas starts from the day of Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month. It is also called Chaumasa. This is the time when Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra and rests in the underworld. This time is considered best for worship, chanting, penance etc. At this time, all the auspicious functions like marriage, engagement, Mundan Sanskar, naming ceremony, house warming etc. are stopped. Why does the duration of Chaturmas change every year?
Astrologers say that there are only four months of Chaturmas, but according to the Panchang, the time of rest of Lord Vishnu is not always the same. In the last 101 years, the duration of Chaturmas has been between 117 to 149 days. Looking at the almanac from the year 1926 to 2026, it is found that the timing of Chaturmas has been changing every year due to the movement of the moon, waxing and waning of dates and Adhikamas.
Chaturmas was the highest in the years 1982 and 1955.
In the year 1982, Lord Vishnu rested for 149 days. This year the duration of Chaturmas was 149 days. This happened because Adhikamas had occurred in the middle of Chaturmas and the Moon had moved away from the Earth, due to which the dates had become longer. This had happened once before even in 1982. That year was 1955. In 1955, Chaturmas was of 149 days.
If we look at the history of the last 100 years, Chaturmas of 118 days has been observed 32 times, 26 of 119 days and 25 times of 117 days. The maximum Chaturmas of 149 days was observed in 1982 and 1955.
