Bengaluru Weather Today: IMD issues yellow alert, strong thunderstorms likely

Bengaluru: Even as Bengaluru continues to receive rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city and adjoining areas for May 21. The Karnataka capital may receive strong thunderstorms and gusty winds. The department has also issued alert for frequent spells of heavy rain.

While local officials continue to track the storm path, the alert is likely to impact popular hill station areas near Bengaluru. With the wind expected to move at 40 kilometres/hour, the same may also lead to the fall of trees. The continuous  lightning may impact going outside.

Parts of Karnataka may receive heavy rainfall

Meanwhile, as per the monsoon department, the state may continue to receive heavy rains with thunder from May 22. Both North and South interior parts of Karnataka my receive heavy rains with thunder, lightning and gusty winds (50-60 km per hour) in several districts.

The authorities have issued orange alert for Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts, with heavy rain and hailstorm expected on Thursday. Officials have issued a yellow for Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumkur, Ramanagara and Mandya districts, with moderate to heavy rain expected.

Parts of Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag districts may receive heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. The department has predicted maximum temperatures between 39°C to 42°C and dry weather in Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Raichur districts. Cool breeze or light pre-monsoon rain may take place in the evening.

Possibility of a thunderstorm in coastal Karnataka

Notably, there is a possibility of thunderstorms with a speed of 30-40 kmph at one or two places in coastal Karnataka from May 22 to May 24. Officials have also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
