Ganga Dussehra 2026: Ganga has the status of mother in Sanatan Dharma. Mother Ganga came out of heaven and came to earth. Ganga has been described as the most sacred river in the scriptures. Ganga water is used in worship and every auspicious work. By taking a dip in the river Ganga, all the sins of a person are washed away and he attains salvation after death. After death the ashes are immersed in the Ganga itself. From this the importance of Mother Ganga can be known.
This is also the reason why Mother Ganga has been called the giver of salvation. Two festivals of Mother Ganga are celebrated throughout the year. One is Ganga Saptami and the other is Ganga Dussehra. The festival of Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. This year Ganga Dussehra is going to be celebrated on 25th May. It is a mythological belief that on the day of Ganga Dussehra, Mother Ganga descended from heaven to earth. Bathing in the Ganges, worshiping and donating have special significance on this day. The number ten is also considered very important on the day of Ganga Dussehra. Significance of number ’10’ on Ganga Dussehra
According to mythology, when Mother Ganga descended from heaven to earth, it was the ‘Dashami’ date of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. Along with this, 10 special and auspicious yogas were formed simultaneously in the sky and astrology on this date. For this reason this day has been said to give unique results. It is believed that on this day, by taking a dip in river Ganga with devotion or meditating on Mother Ganga, 10 types of sins of a person are destroyed.

These sins are as follows. Carnal Sin: Violence, theft and adultery (relationship with another woman). Speech related sins: Speaking harsh words, lying, gossiping behind the back and talking nonsense. Mental Sin: Desire to grab others’ wealth, thinking ill of someone and untruth.
Bath-Rule of 10 in charity
On this day, devotees should donate 10 types of items (like fruits, sattu, matka, hand fan, clothes and food etc.) in number of 10 to the needy. Along with this, one should also take a dip 10 times while bathing on this day.
