ITR Filing Deadline Extended: The Income Tax Department has extended the last date for filing income tax returns one more day. Now taxpayers can file returns by 16 September 2025 instead of September 15. This decision is especially relieved for those who were facing technical problems on the e-filing portal.

Why the date was extended?

The Income Tax Department said that necessary updates and improvements were being made on the e-filing portal. For this reason, this decision was taken at the last moment. The department has appealed to the taxpayers to file ITR in time so that problems like late fees can be avoided. The Income Tax Department tweeted that the last date for Financial Year 2025 has been extended one day. Now returns can be filed by 16 September instead of 15 September. Earlier, its deadline was increased from 31 July to 15 September. The Central Board of Direct Taxes took this decision at the last moment. At the same time, the department also informed that necessary changes were being made on the ITR filing portal, so the portal remained in maintenance mode from midnight to 2 pm and during this time the taxpayer ITR could not file.

Penalty will have to be paid if missed

If a taxpayer files income tax returns after September 15, it will be considered a billowed return. In such a situation, you will have to pay late fees. Those whose annual income is more than Rs 5 lakh, will have to pay a fine of Rs 5000, while whose income is up to Rs 5 lakh, they will have to pay a late fee of Rs 1000. Apart from this, the burden of interest may also increase by filling late returns and in many cases there will be no benefit of tax deduction.
