It is also called Purushottam month or Malmas. This additional month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world. Auspicious and auspicious works like marriage, engagement, Mundan Sanskar, Namkaran, Upanayan Sanskar and house warming are prohibited in Adhikamas. Many people have this question in their mind that why does Adhikamaas fall every third year? In such a situation, let us know the complete mathematics of Adhikamas.
That’s why Adhikamaas falls
There is science behind this extra month that comes every three years. Adhikamas is related to the period of Earth’s revolution around the Sun and the Moon. The Earth makes one revolution around the Sun in 365 days and about 6 hours. This is known as solar year. The Hindu calendar is based on the phases of the moon. It consists of 12 months. The lunar year is of 354 days.

Adhikamas formed by combining the remaining days
In this way, every year there is a difference between the solar year and the lunar year. This difference is about 11 days. In three years this difference becomes 33 days. Every year, an additional month Adhikamas occurs to bridge this gap between the solar and lunar years. Adhikamas, which started from 17th May, will end on 15th June. It is believed that Adhikamas is formed by combining the remaining days. That’s why no god gave it his name.
In such a situation, Lord Shiva requested Lord Vishnu to accept the supremacy of this month. Lord Vishnu accepted the request of Lord Shiva and gave his name (Purushottam) to this month.
