IndiGo flight turns dark, passengers left without AC, lights fail amid 25-minute blackout

New Delhi: A chaotic scene unfolded after an IndiGo flight’s air conditioner and cabin lights shut down for around 25 minutes. The Ground Power Unit (GPU) of flight number 6E657 suddenly failed. However, the plane was in a stationary position on the tarmac, triggering a massive uproar among passengers.

With cabin lights shut down for about 25 minutes, the aircraft was in total darkness, creating suffocation-like conditions for passengers in the hot conditions inside the aircraft.

The incident occurred at 8:55 pm and lasted until 9:15 pm on Sunday, May 17, at Vadodara airport. With no newspaper, sticks, or any material, passengers were seen fanning themselves with whatever they could find in the intense heat.

One of the passengers recorded the whole incident on his mobile phone. Later, the video went viral on social media.

In response, the airport officials said that the situation was created because of a technical failure in the Ground Power Unit, which supplies electricity to the plane’s cabin, including air conditioning, lights, and cockpit instruments.

Furthermore, a team of IndiGo technicians immediately began the repair work and also restored the GPU. After the power supply was restored, passengers breathed a sigh of relief, and then the aircraft departed for Delhi.

IndiGo’s response:

Due to a technical snag in the aircraft, a delay in the flight was recorded as the aircraft was scheduled to depart at 8:40 pm, but due to the failure, it departed at 10 pm.
