Gorakhpur to get world-class sports complex alongside new cricket stadium

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday announced the construction of a world-class sports complex in Gorakhpur alongside the proposed International Cricket Stadium being developed in the Tal Nador area.
The announcement was made during the Bhoomi Pujan and foundation laying ceremony of the stadium project attended by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

According to officials, the international cricket stadium will be built across 46 acres at an estimated cost of around Rs 393 crore and is expected to have a seating capacity of nearly 30,000 spectators. An additional 60 acres of adjoining land has been earmarked for the proposed sports complex.

The Chief Minister said the sports complex would include facilities for several indoor sports while also supporting outdoor disciplines such as hockey. He stated that the project could contribute to economic activity in the region through the development of hotels, restaurants and local markets, along with generating employment opportunities.

During the event, Adityanath also highlighted ongoing infrastructure and connectivity improvements in eastern Uttar Pradesh, noting reduced travel time between Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Lucknow due to improved road networks.

The Chief Minister said the state government has expanded recruitment opportunities for athletes, adding that several medal-winning sportspersons have already received government jobs through direct recruitment. He also referred to sports initiatives such as Khelo India and Fit India, which aim to encourage participation in sports across the country.

The programme also included a review of the stadium’s proposed design and facilities. Representatives from Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum were present at the event, with officials stating that part of the funding support for the project would come through CSR contributions.
